HTC HD2 – a flagship worthy of the name

December 14th, 2009 Samuel Posted in HTC mobile phones 1 Comment »

Free on T-Mobile, O2 or Vodafone. From £36 per month with 1000 minutes and unlimited texts.

HTC has been pushing the boat out with its recent smartphones, but its HD2 is a knock-out. While everyone has their personal preferences and little fads, it would take an Orc-like perspective on the world not to be impressed by the display that fronts its feature-rich core.

Thirteen years of working with Microsoft has certainly paid off. Essentially, the HD2 is a big screen in your pocket: 4.3 inches (diagonal) of high-resolution touch cinema, yet housed in an amazingly skinny shell. It is the world’s first capacitive touch technology to run under Windows: Windows Mobile 6.5 to be precise.

Just to be clear, capacitive is the name for a technology made famous on Apple’s iPhone. It relies on the electrical properties of the human body to detect when and where on the display you are touching. This means you can be as delicate as you like, but it generally doesn’t work effectively or at all with a stylus or wearing gloves.

Also for the first time in Windows, HTC has allied the touchscreen with its HTC Sense concept: customising the HD2 with favourite apps on the home screen, one-touch contacts, easy flipping from email to call and, should the need arise, setting up a conference call. Whether it matches your expectations of a “holistic” experience as described by HTC, it is undoubtedly impressive and user-friendly, with a logical layout and many one-touch operations to watch, browse and flip through your stuff.

It weighs in at 157g - heavy even for a top-of-the-range PDA/ smartphone - but somehow, because it is so thin, the heft of the HD2 enhances its attraction: it lets you know its there and gives you something to press against.

The sheer clarity and definition of the display is remarkable and for those of us no longer able to spot a gnat on a fencepost half a mile away, it makes Web page and document viewing not only feasible, but pleasurable. Navigation is slick, straightforward and easy to control; viewing is crisp and rich, whether or not it actually conforms to high definition in the strictest sense.

Once experienced, Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir’s culinary and sensory experience puts most eateries in the shade. In similar fashion, the HD2’s sumptuous visual experience makes it hard to return to a smaller, less striking display.

HDC has raised the bar for smartphones and with the likes of Motorola and its Android-based Milestone also emerging, 2010 should see some amazing devices on the streets going head-to-head.

New HTC Hero deals on 12 month contracts

August 22nd, 2009 Samuel Posted in HTC mobile phones 1 Comment »

Now free on a 12 month contract with £80 cash back.

The HTC Hero is the latest touchscreen smartphone to come with the Android OS. Despite its controversial, angled chin, the Hero is probably the best looking Android phone so far and it has several new improvements and enhancements.

The all-new user interface, called HTC Sense, lets you view a log of all communication channels for a chosen contact. Simply choose a name from your contacts and within a single view you can see all calls, texts and emails plus all communications on the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

The 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen is very good and the user interface with trackball navigation is excellent. The Hero has 3G with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a GPS receiver and a digital compass for automatic navigation and rotation of maps. The multi-touch screen also has a built in accelerometer for auto-rotate and zooming in the gallery and web browser is a treat. Tethering is available, which means the Hero can be used as a broadband modem.

There’s a standard 3.5mm audio jack and stereo Bluetooth, but video playback is disappointing. MP4 video playback is poor in higher resolutions and there’s no support for DivX or Xvid. if you have no interest in watching movies on your phone then that shouldn’t be too much of a concern though.

Also available on T-Mobile, where it is known as the T-Mobile G2 Touch.

July 17th, 2009 Samuel Posted in HTC mobile phones No Comments »

Less than £30 per month on an 18 month contract.

The HTC Hero is the third Android-powered device from HTC. It has a design similar to the HTC Magic but retains the ‘chin’ from the first Android phone, the G1.

The Hero has an all-new user interface, called HTC Sense. One of the most impressive and useful features is its ability to view a log of all communication channels for a chosen contact. For example, choose a name from your contacts and within a single view you can see all calls, texts and emails plus all communications on the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

Key features include a 3.2 inch touchscreen with multi touch, plus Wi-fi, HSDPA, GPS, a digital compass and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus.

Free HTC Touch Pro 2 Deals

June 22nd, 2009 Samuel Posted in HTC mobile phones No Comments »

Only £34.26 per month on an 18 month contract. On Orange Racoon 35 (18m) you get 600 minutes per month to call mobiles, unlimited calls to UK landlines and 500 texts. Mobile internet can be added for an extra £5 per month.

The HTC Touch Pro2 is the successor to the Touch Pro. Similar in specification to the smaller Touch Diamond2, the Pro2 has a larger screen and an impressive QWERTY keyboard. They both have a sleek, professional look and are expected to be this year’s best-selling business phones. The most striking feature of the Pro2 is its high resolution 3.6 inch touchscreen. Just fractionally smaller than the colossal screen found on the Touch HD.

The five row QWERTY keyboard is slightly larger than previous HTC QWERTY devices. It has an offset key pattern, just like on a laptop and the screen can tilt at different angles, which is useful. Place the Pro2 face down and it becomes a comprehensive speakerphone with a high quality speaker on the back, a microphone, noise cancellation sensor and a mute button.

The Touch Pro2 comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional which incorporates pocket Office, comprising Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and PDF view. All of these features help make the device a very desirable prospect in the business marketplace. Bundled with a 3.2 megapixel camera which has auto focus for good quality image capture.

As expected with most Smartphone’s the Pro2 has Wi-fi, HSPDA (up to 7.2 Mbps), GPS and Bluetooth. Other features include the TouchFLO finger swipe navigation, touch sensitive navigation controls, handwriting recognition, a very good web browser, FM radio with RDS, a VGA videocall camera, the list goes on and on!

HTC Magic Deals - Save £10 per month

June 16th, 2009 Samuel Posted in HTC mobile phones No Comments »

You can now get the HTC Magic free on the Vodafone Text 40 Value plan. Normally costing £40 per month, Vodafone will give you a £10 monthly discount.

This is applied directly to your bill, you don’t have to claim it. With the VAT adjustment you’ll pay just £29.36 per month on an 18 month contact.

You get 600 minutes per month, unlimited mobile internet and email on your HTC Magic, plus unlimited texts. This is great value for money.

The HTC Magic brings you everything you love about the internet, exactly how you want it. It will keep you entertained, up to date and in touch, wherever you are. Exclusive to Vodafone, the HTC Magic is the second mobile to run on the Android OS. The first was the T-Mobile G1. One of the most notable differences between the Magic and the G1 is the lack of a QWERTY keyboard. This makes the Magic slimmer, lighter and more pocket-friendly. The 3.2 inch touchscreen interface is also an improvement over the G1, with plenty of little tweaks in the latest Cupcake incarnation of the Android OS.

The Magic has an accelerometer for autorotation and the screen has the option of handwriting recognition or the onscreen QWERTY keyboard. The trackball makes it easy to navigate around menus and scroll though messages. It’s not to everyone’s liking and HTC have removed the trackball from their new Touch Diamond 2; however it’s not a drawback to the high powered performance of this phone.

As we get into what the HTC Magic can do, it becomes very impressive. The Android OS has Gmail, Google maps including StreetView and YouTube all just a touch away. The HTC Magic is a practical business phone. It’s equipped with all the standard document viewers and with Wi-fi, Bluetooth and HSPDA (with download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps) this is a very useful device to have outside the office. The HTC Magic is a step up from the G1 and is probably going to be the best Android phone available for a while.

April 28th, 2009 Samuel Posted in HTC mobile phones No Comments »

There are some great new deals this week with the HTC Touch HD on Orange. You can now claim more than £200 cash back when you sign up to a standard 18m contract for £39.15 per month. Orange Dolphin 40 offers 900 minutes and unlimited texts. Racoon 40 gives you 900 minutes, 500 texts and unlimited landline calls. With all plans you can add mobile internet for an extra £5 per month.

The HTC Touch HD has a high-res, 3.8 inch, touchscreen display. This amazingly large screen alongside a 5 megapixel camera, standard 3.5mm headphone jack, integrated GPS, FM Radio and HSDPA internet capabilities give the Touch HD a compelling list of multimedia specifications. The intuitive TouchFLO 3D interface makes browsing the web a joy. Double tap the screen and the Opera browser zooms in smoothly to your chosen web page. Then simply swipe across the screen with your finger to scroll around web pages quickly and effortlessly.

Listening to music using HTC’s music player is a breeze. The intuitive touch screen controls work equally as well when scrolling around the inbuilt, GPS powered Google Maps. Measuring just 12mm, the Touch HD is thin for a powerful Windows mobile device. This is due to the omission of a slide out QWERTY keyboard. With its large screen and advanced multimedia capabilities the Touch HD will no doubt become a best-selling web browsing, email, office, movie and music device.

The most striking feature is its high resolution WVGA 480×800 pixel, 3.2 inch, TFT resistive touchscreen which will allow the user to fully exploit the impressive capabilities of the phone.
